Time to say ‘Gracias’

in Books

As I mentioned over at SpanglishBaby today, now that my three-year-old daughter is able to kind of understand the meaning of Thanksgiving, we’ve been talking about it a lot.

Since she is a big book-lover, I was very thankful when we received Pat Mora’s latest book, “Gracias/Thanks” last week because it instantly became a great way to explain what this beautiful holiday is all about.

As you probably know by now, we’re are big fans of Mora and this bilingual book does not disappoint. It’s the story of a little boy who lists all the things for which he is thankful. The sentences are simple enough for preschoolers to understand and my daughter is able to identify with all the things the little boy is thankful for like the ladybugs, the waves and Abuelita.

Every night after we finish reading this book, we each take turns saying some things for which we are thankful and I love that my daughter, like the little boy in the book, is always thankful for her familia.

In our family we take turns hosting Thanksgiving. Who ever hosts makes the turkey and the guests bring the side dishes. That way everyone gets to enjoy the day :) Happy Thanksgiving!!

Our family gets together for the whole of Thanksgiving Day. We watch the Thanksgiving Day Parade as we begin to prepare food. At about 3:00 we begin to eat a huge feast. Then of course the football game. It’s truly an American Thanksgiving.

We have Thanksgiving at my Tia’s. She makes her non-traditional, traditional Salvadoran style turkey. Muy jugoso and delicioso! It’s nice. One of the few times per year we all get together since everyone lives so spread out.

Well, when I get to go back home it’s turkey but also pernil, arroz con gandules and other Puertorrican dishes. Got to have some more sabor!

I always phone Grandma, who is a Canadian now living in Cali, and wish her a happy Thanksgiving. Twice. Once on Canada’s Thanksgiving and one on the US’s.

I have had to work every Thanksgiving for the last 10 years…so I guess my family’s tradotion is to make me a plate of food that I get to enjoy on Friday while the rest of the crazies are shopping!

Thanks for the giveaway.

In my family we almost always go to my in laws for dinner (most of my family is out of town). They often have great grandmas or other out of town guests staying with them, and they always invite my sister and family if she is in town. We eat a big dinner, desert, and either play games or chat until late. We always end up spending the night.
(My daughter and I are also starting a tradition of watching the parade as I did with my Dad when I was growing up)

We always get together with extended family and play games after the big meal. It always ends in big laughs!

We don’t have a real Thanksgiving tradition yet. We just go to my in-laws. They don’t cook traditionally so this year we bought food at Gelson’s and it was DELICIOUS!! I really recommend it if your family doesn’t cook!
The one tradition we have done at home is a craft which is writing what we’re thankful for in a little cut-out leaf and then hanging them all somewhere around the house. My toddler is loving it!

Every year since I’ve been married we spend it with my Husban’s family. We have a great feast and laugh and catch up with all those far away. Soon though, now that our little ones are getting a little older, we plan to start celebrating at our home and start with our own TG traditions. I have so many ideas!
